About Coomera & Northern Gold Coast Region

Our Astonishing Past

coomera early daysAccording to an early historian W.E. Hanlon, the name Coomera originated from  Kumera Kumera - the aboriginal word for a native species of wattle. In a neighbouring dialect the word referred to blood.

Early resident Charles Binstead believed that Kumera referred to the river. Rory O'Connor in The Kombumerri: Aboriginal People of the Gold Coast states that Coomera means blood or vein and refers to the flowing river - the life source of the surrounding lands.

Coomera River: The Coomera River, shown  on some early maps as the Arrowsmith, rises in the subtropical forests of Lamington Plateau, twists and winds its way down through the valley between the Beechmont and Darlington Ranges to Upper Coomera. From here,  its waters  spread wide,  flowing along the floodplain of Lower Coomera to finally empty into the Broadwater in Southern Moreton Bay.

coomera riverEuropean Settlement: By 1865 the Coomera was already an important waterway for timber-getters  working in the Hinterland. The Binstead family, timber-getters and farmers, settled at Upper Coomera near a good ford in the river, accessible except during  floods. This route was used by the first horse mailrun between Brisbane and Nerang.  Later a ferry service was established downstream  and this site was called the Ferry Township, or Lower Coomera,  to distinguish it from the original settlement.  Travellers used  the more direct southern  route and Coomera township grew and prospered.

The ferry was the main link for the coast road until the first Coomera Bridge was opened in 1930. Lower Coomera was also located on the route of the South Coast Rail Line. A rail station here  confirmed the  future of permanant settlement.

Our Amazing Present

Coomera has changed very rapidly over the past few years. High density housing east of the Motorway in and around the old Coomera Township brought many new families to the area. New shops opened and activity in the area has increased. This activity confirmed to many people that Coomera was finally on the move. Meanwhile, the acreage precinct along Foxwell Drive (which is also the middle of the new Coomera Town Centre) has seen developers, investors and speculators buying up rural land for future redevelopment.

The pace of investment in land in the Town Centre precinct and along Foxwell Drive has outstripped all expectations. The volume of investors in the area has led to a steep rise in asking prices. Consequently, the area has many land parcels currently under contract with an eye on future development. This activity has been fuelled by constant media attention regarding the new Town Centre and this has attracted developers and investors from all parts of Australia. Today Coomera is the fastest growing suburb in Australia.

It is clear from the activity that many people are taking up investment positions in order to be a part of the future development of Coomera.

Our Exciting Future

The Coomera New Town Centre is planned for, and has approval for, an area of approximately 60 hectares located around the Brisbane-Gold Coast Rail link and centred on the Coomera station. Once completed, this new city will be as large as Southport with over 100,000 square metres of retail space that will cover an area four times larger than Pacific Fair.

The 'New Town Centre' plan will be a true 'city centre' with retail areas forming part of the streetscape, similar to Southport, rather that a single major shopping centre. The whole of the Coomera Town Center area, including the residential component, is about the same size as the Brisbane CBD. The town centre will be surrounded by satellite centres, local and district, along with neighbourhood centres. Also planned, are a number of Local, State & Federal government offices with services.

These include a library, community hall to host 1000 people, council branch offices, a medical precinct including a possible new hospital and new public & private schools. Higher education will feature a campus for Griffith University and a new TAFE located close to the train station. Town planning has indicated that the core of the Town centre will see development up to 14 storey buildings.

More developments will be happening in Coomera on almost a daily basis. We will keep you informed on this site with periodic updates.

We have been advised that the standard train (Interurban Multiple Units) on the Gold Coast line should have toilet facilities due to the distance between the Gold Coast and Brisbane. We are seeking your input regarding this issue and ask that if you catch a Gold Coast train at any time (peak or off peak) that you advise us whether or not there are toilet facilities. We particularly want you to advise us of the time of the train service and in particular if there was or there was not a toilet on the train.
